Make sure that your property is a safe workplace for your tenants, visitors and vendors by verifying your vendor’s safety practices! All service providers at your property should be trained to avoid and prevent all types of safety hazards that could occur. Safety training should be planned, based on the potential environment, taught in a classroom, practiced and documented.
Our safety training topic for October was partner rescue. For the hands-on portion we had each of our technicians demonstrate the skill using a weighted bag. We used a weighted bag rather than a person to avoid passing germs from breathing the same air. The bag was not quite the same weight as a person, but the practice goes through all the correct steps to safely bring an injured technician to the ground.
We have never needed to use this skill in the field because the rest of our safety program teaches our technicians how to avoid hazards that may lead to this type of need, but rest assured, we are prepared if the need arises!
Does your vendor have a safety program? Do they have monthly safety meetings? Do they have hands-on practice? Is their program documented? Is the program based on OSHA standards, Industry Consensus Standards, and current best practices? Make sure you are protected by asking these questions and then verifying the answers.
